Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Market Overview

Market size, growth outlook, data-center demand signals and technology shifts shaping the 2026–2034 opportunity for solid oxide fuel cell systems.

Executive Market Perspective

The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) market is estimated at USD 2.16 billion in 2025 and USD 4.02 billion in 2026, with the report forecasting expansion to USD 13.00 billion by 2034, representing a 15.8% CAGR over 2026–2034. North America is identified as the largest regional market, driven by on-site power procurement for data centers, utility programmes for large loads and the scale of the leading US manufacturer.

The market covers SOFC systems, stacks and modules sold for stationary, transport and portable applications, together with associated installation and service revenue. Electricity sold under power-purchase arrangements from operator-owned fleets is excluded. Value is concentrated in large stationary systems running on natural gas, biogas or hydrogen blends, where high electrical efficiency, fast deployment and grid independence are commercially decisive, while residential micro-CHP, licensing and component supply form smaller but strategically important revenue pools.

USD 2.02 Bn
Bloom Energy FY2025 revenue

Bloom Energy reported FY2025 total revenue of USD 2,024.0 million, up 37.3% year on year, with product revenue of USD 1,531.3 million, making it the largest SOFC supplier by a wide margin.

USD 3.9–4.2 Bn
Bloom FY2026 revenue guidance

After a record second quarter with revenue of USD 1,065.4 million, Bloom raised its FY2026 guidance to USD 3.9–4.2 billion, signalling a step change in SOFC demand during 2026.

1.8 GW+
Bloom installed base, end-2025

Bloom had deployed more than 1.8 GW across about 1,100 sites in nine countries by the end of 2025 and is expanding Fremont capacity from 1 GW to 2 GW per year by the end of 2026.

Analyst observation: demand has shifted from sustainability-led distributed generation toward speed-to-power. Data-center operators and utilities facing multi-year grid-connection queues are buying SOFC capacity because it can be deployed in months, sited at the load and scaled in modular blocks. Agreements with AEP, Equinix, Oracle and Brookfield illustrate how AI-related electricity demand has become the market’s main growth engine.

Technology-to-revenue shift: SOFCs operate at high temperatures and reach about 60% electrical efficiency, with combined heat and power raising total efficiency further. Fuel flexibility allows systems to run on natural gas today and move to biogas or hydrogen later. Metal-supported cell designs, larger manufacturing lines and licensing models are lowering cost and broadening the supplier base beyond a single dominant vendor.

Regional observation: North America and Asia-Pacific together account for the large majority of 2025 revenue. The United States is the core market, South Korea is the second-largest deployment base for large stationary systems, and Japan sustains residential and commercial SOFC through its Ene-Farm programme. Europe is building cell and stack manufacturing capacity, but commercial system demand remains comparatively small.

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Market Regional Analysis

Regional revenue share, deployment evidence, policy support and manufacturing conditions shaping the SOFC market.

North America is the largest regional market, accounting for an estimated ~68% of global 2025 revenue, followed by Asia-Pacific at an estimated ~25%. Europe, the Middle East & Africa and South America are smaller markets where manufacturing investment, hydrogen strategies and early commercial projects shape longer-term demand.

North America

Data-center demand and the leading manufacturing base

North America accounted for an estimated ~68% of global 2025 revenue.

North America leads the SOFC market because it combines the largest single manufacturer, the deepest pool of data-center investment and a power system struggling to connect new large loads quickly. Bloom Energy, headquartered in California with manufacturing in Fremont, reported FY2025 revenue of USD 2,024.0 million and identifies the United States as its largest market by revenue and installed base. Demand from hyperscale, colocation and enterprise data centers has transformed SOFC from a niche distributed-generation option into a mainstream on-site power source.

The commercial driver is speed to power. Utility interconnection queues and transmission constraints can delay new large loads for years, while modular SOFC systems can be installed within months and expanded in blocks. Agreements with Equinix, Oracle and Brookfield, and AEP’s up-to-1 GW procurement, show that both end users and utilities are buying SOFC capacity to bridge the gap between AI-driven electricity demand and grid build-out. These contracts also improve demand visibility for suppliers planning capacity expansions.

100 MW+

United States — Data Centers

Bloom Energy expanded its agreement with Equinix in February 2025 to more than 100 MW across 19 data centers in six US states, and in July 2025 agreed to supply SOFC power to selected Oracle Cloud Infrastructure sites, promising power for an entire data center within 90 days. Brookfield’s October 2025 partnership commits up to USD 5 billion to deploy Bloom systems for AI factories, showing how hyperscale and colocation operators now treat SOFC as primary on-site generation.

Business Wire — Equinix

Asia-Pacific

Utility-scale fuel cells, residential CHP and licensed manufacturing

Asia-Pacific accounted for an estimated ~25% of global 2025 revenue.

Asia-Pacific is the second-largest SOFC region and the most diverse. South Korea hosts large utility and industrial fuel cell installations, Japan has the world’s most established residential SOFC programme, and Taiwan, China and India are building licensed manufacturing capacity. The region’s market is shaped by national hydrogen strategies, energy-security priorities and industrial policy that encourages domestic production of stacks and systems rather than reliance on imports from a single foreign supplier, which is driving a wave of licensing agreements across the region.

Japan supports SOFC through residential and commercial combined heat and power. Ene-Farm Type S residential units from Aisin and Kyocera, developed with Osaka Gas, improved electrical efficiency from 46.5% at launch to 52% in the 2016 model, while Mitsubishi Heavy Industries markets pressurised SOFC hybrids for commercial buildings. The Hydrogen Society Promotion Act, effective October 2024, introduces contracts-for-difference support for low-carbon hydrogen that could strengthen the longer-term case for hydrogen-fuelled SOFC systems in buildings, factories and commercial facilities.

~682 MW

South Korea

South Korea is Bloom Energy’s second-largest market, with about 682 MW deployed through its partnership with SK ecoplant. Doosan Fuel Cell started SOFC mass production at a 50 MW factory in July 2025 using Ceres technology, and its first domestic supply covers 9 MW for the High Changwon project. Clean hydrogen power bidding has awarded far less than offered volumes, and the 2026 draft reduces auction volumes, which tempers near-term demand and shifts attention toward private industrial and commercial buyers.

Bloom Energy 10-K (SEC)

Europe

Technology and stack manufacturing hub

Elcogen’s 2025 factory expansion lifted its annual cell and stack capacity from 10 MW to 360 MW, illustrating Europe’s focus on solid oxide manufacturing.

Europe is a technology and component hub rather than a large system market. The region hosts leading cell, stack and intellectual-property developers, including Ceres Power in the United Kingdom, Elcogen in Estonia, SOLIDpower in Italy and Convion in Finland, but installed SOFC capacity remains small relative to North America and South Korea. European demand has historically centred on micro-CHP for homes and small businesses, with larger commercial systems at an early stage and a limited number of reference projects available to buyers.

Corporate strategy changes have reshaped the landscape. Bosch announced in February 2025 that it would discontinue SOFC development and end its partnership with Ceres, refocusing on PEM electrolysers. Ceres continued to sign licensees in Asia and announced a partnership with Centrica in 2026 aimed at on-site power for data centers and industry. These moves show that Europe’s commercial value increasingly lies in licensing, manufacturing know-how, testing expertise and component supply to partners in other regions.

GBP 32.6 Mn

United Kingdom

Ceres Power, based in Horsham, licenses its metal-supported solid oxide technology to manufacturers including Doosan, Delta, Denso and Weichai. Its 2025 revenue fell to GBP 32.6 million from GBP 51.9 million as licence income timing shifted, but it recorded its first royalties from Doosan production. In 2026 Ceres announced a partnership with Centrica to accelerate solid oxide on-site power for data centers and industry, opening a UK commercial channel for the technology through an established energy services provider.

AJ Bell — Ceres results

Middle East & Africa

Hydrogen strategies with early fuel cell activity

Saudi Arabia’s NEOM 2.2 GW green hydrogen and ammonia plant was about 80% complete in June 2025, with first ammonia to market expected in 2027.

Middle East & Africa is an early-stage SOFC market where demand is linked more to hydrogen strategies and energy-diversification goals than to near-term fuel cell procurement. Saudi Arabia’s NEOM project and the UAE’s National Hydrogen Strategy, which targets 1.4 million tonnes per year of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031 and 15 million tonnes by 2050, position the Gulf as a future hydrogen supplier. Domestic use of fuel cells for power generation is still limited, and few commercial SOFC installations have been publicly reported in the region.

The commercial case in the Gulf rests on data-center investment, industrial diversification and the availability of low-cost natural gas. Large AI and cloud projects planned in the region require reliable power, and fuel-flexible SOFC systems could serve sites where grid capacity is constrained or where operators seek a pathway to hydrogen. However, subsidised grid tariffs and the dominance of utility-scale generation limit the economic advantage of on-site fuel cells today, so adoption is likely to begin with pilot and strategic projects.

South America

Hydrogen frameworks forming ahead of fuel cell demand

Brazil’s Law 14,948 of August 2024 established a legal framework for low-carbon hydrogen, and Law 14,990 created tax-credit support for hydrogen produced between 2028 and 2032.

South America is the smallest SOFC region, with demand limited to early projects and demonstrations. Brazil is building the policy foundation for a hydrogen economy through its 2024 low-carbon hydrogen law and the PHBC tax-credit programme, while Chile and other countries are developing hydrogen strategies focused on export production. These frameworks address hydrogen supply rather than fuel cell deployment, but they could eventually support stationary applications where hydrogen or biogas becomes locally available at competitive cost.

Brazil also has a large agricultural and agro-industrial sector that produces biogas from residues, sugarcane processing and livestock operations. Because SOFC systems can operate on biogas after appropriate cleanup, biogas-to-power is a plausible early niche for solid oxide technology, offering higher electrical efficiency than engines and lower local emissions. Commercial adoption would require local distribution, fuel-processing expertise and service support, all of which remain limited for SOFC suppliers in the region and would need to be built through local partners.

Competition

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Market Competitive Landscape

Supplier positioning across system manufacturing, stack technology, licensing, residential CHP and component supply.

The solid oxide fuel cell market is competitively structured around four capability groups: large stationary system manufacturers, technology licensors and their manufacturing partners, residential and commercial CHP suppliers, and cell and stack specialists. Competitive advantage depends on manufacturing scale, electrical efficiency, stack durability, fuel flexibility, deployment speed and the ability to finance and service large fleets under long-term agreements.

Stationary System Makers

Utility- and data-center-scale SOFC platforms with installation, service and financing support.

Technology Licensors

Cell and stack IP licensed to industrial partners that manufacture systems under royalty agreements.

CHP & Residential Suppliers

Micro-CHP and small commercial units combining electricity and heat for buildings.

Cell & Stack Specialists

Anode-supported cells, stacks and modules supplied to integrators and OEMs.

Bloom Energy dominates the market by revenue. Its FY2025 revenue of USD 2,024.0 million and more than 1.8 GW installed base give it scale advantages in manufacturing cost, supply-chain purchasing and service. The Bloom Energy Server delivers 325 kW per unit with 53–65% electrical efficiency and can run on natural gas, biogas, hydrogen blends or hydrogen, making it the reference platform for data-center and utility procurement.

Ceres Power competes through licensing rather than system sales. Its metal-supported SteelCell technology has been licensed to Doosan Fuel Cell, Delta Electronics, Denso and Weichai Power, and Doosan began mass production in July 2025. This model spreads manufacturing investment across partners and could create several new system suppliers by the end of the decade. Elcogen supplies cells and stacks from its 360 MW Tallinn factory, while Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Aisin, Kyocera, Miura, SOLIDpower, Convion and WATT Fuel Cell serve commercial, residential and portable niches.

Market Growth Drivers, Restraints & Commercial Factors

The market is supported by data-center demand, high efficiency and fuel flexibility, but revenue conversion depends on manufacturing scale, fuel costs, policy support and supplier concentration.

Solid oxide fuel cells are moving from a specialised distributed-generation technology toward a scalable source of on-site power for large electricity users. Demand forms where grid capacity is scarce, power reliability is critical and efficiency or emissions advantages matter. The opportunity is substantial, but revenue depends on manufacturing ramp-up, stack durability, natural-gas pricing, hydrogen availability and policy support for clean on-site generation.

Demand Formation — AI data centers turn speed to power into a buying criterion. Equinix, Oracle and Brookfield agreements, together with AEP’s up-to-1 GW procurement, show operators and utilities buying SOFC capacity because modular systems can be installed in months while grid connections can take years. Bloom’s 2026 guidance of USD 3.9–4.2 billion reflects that shift.

Product Economics — High efficiency lowers fuel cost per kWh. SOFCs reach about 60% electrical efficiency according to the US DOE, and Bloom’s datasheet cites 53–65%, with total efficiency above 90% in heat-recovery configurations. Higher efficiency reduces fuel consumption and emissions relative to engines, strengthening lifetime economics.

Pricing & Procurement — Long-term agreements and financing shape orders. Large buyers increasingly procure SOFC through framework agreements, utility programmes and third-party financing, such as Brookfield’s commitment of up to USD 5 billion. These structures convert capital expenditure into service contracts and improve order visibility for suppliers.

Supply Chain — Capacity expansions must keep pace with demand. Bloom is expanding Fremont capacity to 2 GW per year by the end of 2026, Elcogen raised stack capacity to 360 MW and Doosan opened a 50 MW SOFC factory. Ceramic materials, interconnects and balance-of-plant components must scale in parallel to avoid delivery bottlenecks.

Regulatory Influence — Tax credits and hydrogen policy support adoption. The 2025 US tax law kept fuel cells eligible for the 30% Section 48E investment tax credit for projects beginning construction from 2026 to 2033. Japan’s Hydrogen Society Promotion Act and Korea’s hydrogen power bidding programme add support, although Korean auction volumes have been reduced.

Real Constraint — Supplier concentration and natural-gas dependence. One vendor accounts for most global revenue, creating execution risk for buyers, and most systems run on natural gas, exposing operators to fuel-price volatility and emissions scrutiny. Bosch’s 2025 exit and FuelCell Energy’s solid oxide pause show how difficult commercial scale-up remains.

Evidence: Bloom–AEP.

Segmentation

Market Segmentation by Type

The Type segmentation follows the two principal SOFC cell geometries defined in the report scope.

Planar SOFC represented an estimated ~95% of 2025 market revenue, making this the largest By Type revenue segment.

By Type, the market is divided by cell geometry. Geometry influences power density, sealing approach, thermal cycling tolerance, start-up time and manufacturing method, and therefore determines which applications and production strategies each design suits best.

Planar SOFC

Flat cells stacked with interconnect plates deliver high power density and suit automated, high-volume manufacturing. Planar designs underpin the Bloom Energy Server, Ceres Power’s metal-supported SteelCell and Elcogen’s anode-supported cells. Ceres reports that its metal-supported cells operate at 450–630–C, enabling laser-welded seals and lower-cost stainless-steel components, while electrolyte-supported cells operate at 800–1,000–C.

Tubular SOFC

Cylindrical or tube-shaped cells offer strong mechanical integrity and tolerance to thermal cycling, with simpler high-temperature sealing. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries uses tubular cell technology in its pressurised SOFC and micro gas turbine hybrid systems for commercial buildings. Tubular designs typically have lower volumetric power density and higher manufacturing cost than planar stacks, which limits their share of commercial volume.

Segmentation

Market Segmentation by Application

Application segmentation follows the principal use cases defined in the report scope.

Stationary Power represented an estimated ~97% of 2025 market revenue, reflecting the concentration of demand in on-site generation.

By Application, the market is segmented into Stationary Power, Transportation and Portable & Auxiliary Power. High operating temperatures and long start-up times make SOFC best suited to continuously operating stationary systems, while mobile and portable uses remain specialised niches.

Stationary Power

Prime power and combined heat and power for data centers, commercial buildings, industrial sites, utilities and homes. This includes Bloom’s 325 kW Energy Server modules, Doosan’s utility-scale SOFC projects in South Korea, Japan’s Ene-Farm Type S residential units and commercial CHP systems from SOLIDpower, Convion and Miura. Continuous operation suits the thermal characteristics of solid oxide technology and maximises its efficiency advantage.

Transportation

Range extenders, auxiliary power units and propulsion support for trucks, marine vessels and other vehicles. Solid oxide systems can run on liquid or gaseous fuels with high efficiency, but start-up time, thermal cycling and vibration tolerance remain technical barriers. Commercial activity is limited to development programmes and small demonstration fleets.

Portable & Auxiliary Power

Small systems for remote power, backup, recreational and military uses that can run on propane or natural gas. WATT Fuel Cell markets portable and residential products and installed its first 2 kW WATT HOME unit with a gas utility in December 2025 ahead of a 2026 launch. Volumes remain small but provide early markets for compact solid oxide technology.

Segmentation

Market Segmentation by Fuel

Fuel segmentation reflects the primary fuel supplied to installed SOFC systems.

Natural Gas & Biogas represented an estimated ~85% of 2025 market revenue, reflecting the availability of pipeline gas at most installation sites.

By Fuel, the market is segmented into Natural Gas & Biogas, Hydrogen and Syngas & Other Fuels. SOFCs reform hydrocarbon fuels internally at high temperature, so they can operate on a wider range of fuels than low-temperature fuel cells, which gives buyers a pathway from today’s gas supply to lower-carbon fuels.

Natural Gas & Biogas

Pipeline natural gas is the dominant fuel for stationary SOFC because it is widely available at commercial and industrial sites. Biogas from landfills, wastewater and agricultural digesters can be used after cleanup to remove sulphur and siloxanes, offering a renewable fuel option. Natural-gas operation provides high efficiency and lower local emissions than combustion engines, although it still produces carbon dioxide.

Hydrogen

SOFC systems can operate on hydrogen or hydrogen blends, producing electricity with water as the main by-product. Bloom’s Energy Server is offered for hydrogen and hydrogen-blend operation, and policy programmes such as Korea’s hydrogen power bidding and Japan’s Hydrogen Society Promotion Act support hydrogen-fuelled generation. Adoption depends on the availability and cost of low-carbon hydrogen supply.

Syngas & Other Fuels

Syngas from biomass or coal gasification, propane, ammonia and liquid fuels such as diesel or methanol after reforming. These fuels enable SOFC use in remote, industrial and transport applications where pipeline gas is unavailable. Volumes are small and largely in demonstration or niche commercial use, but they extend the technology’s addressable market.

Segmentation

Market Segmentation by End User

Demand is assessed by the organisations that procure, own or operate SOFC systems.

Data Centers & Commercial represented an estimated ~51% of 2025 market revenue, reflecting rapid procurement by colocation, cloud and enterprise operators.

By End User, the market is segmented into Data Centers & Commercial, Industrial and Utilities & Distributed Generation. Procurement models differ across these groups: commercial operators buy for reliability and speed, industrial users prioritise efficiency and heat recovery, and utilities procure capacity to serve customers and support networks.

Data Centers & Commercial

Hyperscale, colocation and enterprise data centers, together with retailers, offices, hospitals and other commercial buildings. Equinix’s more than 100 MW of Bloom systems and Oracle’s 2025 agreement illustrate how data-center operators use SOFC for primary on-site power, while commercial buildings use smaller systems for reliability and energy-cost savings.

Industrial

Manufacturing plants, semiconductor and electronics facilities, chemical sites and other industrial users that value continuous power, heat recovery and power quality. Bloom’s Taiwan installation for Unimicron and Mitsubishi’s commercial hybrids show industrial and large-building interest, particularly where grid reliability or carbon targets are critical.

Utilities & Distributed Generation

Electric and gas utilities, independent power producers and distributed-generation developers, including programmes that place residential CHP units through gas companies. AEP’s up-to-1 GW procurement, SK ecoplant’s Korean deployments and Japan’s Ene-Farm programme demonstrate how utilities use SOFC to add capacity close to load.

Supply Chain

Supply Chain, Manufacturing Capacity & Procurement

Ceramic cell production, stack assembly, balance-of-plant components and licensing partnerships shape how quickly SOFC demand converts into revenue.

The SOFC supply chain is built around ceramic cell manufacturing, stack assembly, balance-of-plant integration and long-term service. Cells use specialised ceramic electrolytes, electrodes and interconnects that require high-temperature processing and tight quality control, while systems need fuel processors, heat exchangers, power electronics and controls. Because production expertise is concentrated in a small number of companies, manufacturing capacity is a key determinant of how quickly demand can be met.

North America’s supply is anchored by Bloom Energy’s Fremont facility, which is being expanded from 1 GW to 2 GW of annual capacity by the end of 2026, with space for about 5 GW. Bloom’s vertically integrated model covers cell, stack and system manufacturing, giving it control over cost and quality, but it also means global SOFC supply depends heavily on one company’s execution. Buyers with large procurement programmes therefore assess capacity reservations and delivery schedules carefully.

Licensing is creating a second supply channel. Ceres Power has licensed its technology to Doosan Fuel Cell, Delta Electronics, Denso and Weichai Power, with Doosan starting mass production at a 50 MW Korean factory in July 2025 and Delta targeting initial production in Taoyuan by the end of 2026. Elcogen’s 360 MW Tallinn plant supplies cells and stacks to integrators. These additions diversify supply and could lower costs as more manufacturers scale.

Evidence: Bloom Energy proxy statement (SEC).

Fuel & Power

Fuel Supply, Hydrogen Readiness & Grid-Independence Outlook

Natural-gas access, hydrogen supply, biogas availability and grid-connection constraints determine where SOFC systems are deployed and how they evolve.

Fuel supply is a defining factor for SOFC deployment. Most stationary systems operate on pipeline natural gas, which is available at many commercial and industrial sites and provides a reliable fuel source for continuous operation. SOFCs reform methane internally at high temperature, avoiding the separate hydrogen production step required by low-temperature fuel cells. This allows high electrical efficiency with existing gas infrastructure, but it ties operating costs and emissions to natural-gas prices and carbon policy.

Grid constraints are the main reason demand has accelerated. Data centers and other large loads face long interconnection timelines in many US regions, and utilities such as AEP have turned to fuel cells to serve new customers while transmission upgrades proceed. Bloom’s Oracle agreement promised power for an entire data center within 90 days, illustrating how on-site generation can bypass grid bottlenecks. In this role, SOFC systems function as primary power, often with grid connection as backup or future supplement.

Hydrogen readiness offers a pathway to lower emissions. SOFC systems can run on hydrogen or hydrogen blends, and policy programmes in Japan, South Korea and other countries aim to scale low-carbon hydrogen supply. Japan’s Hydrogen Society Promotion Act introduces price-gap support for low-carbon hydrogen, and the UAE targets 1.4 million tonnes per year by 2031. Commercial hydrogen supply for on-site power remains limited and expensive, however, so most operators treat hydrogen as a future option rather than a current fuel.

SOFC revenue spans the full chain from fuel supply to site power. The value chain begins with fuel processing and ceramic cell manufacturing, continues through stack assembly and integration into power modules with inverters and controls, and ends with installation, heat recovery and long-term service. The commercial mix varies with system size, application, fuel type and whether customers buy equipment or contract for power and service.

Cell and stack production is the technological core. Electrolytes, electrodes and interconnects must withstand high operating temperatures for years, and stack durability largely determines lifetime cost. Planar stacks dominate commercial volume because they suit automated production and high power density, while tubular designs are used in pressurised hybrids. Metal-supported cells operating at lower temperatures aim to reduce material costs and improve robustness.

System integration converts stacks into deployable products. Power modules combine stacks with fuel processors, heat exchangers, inverters and control systems in enclosures designed for modular installation. Large stationary systems are built from repeating units, such as Bloom’s 325 kW modules, allowing capacity to scale in blocks. Heat recovery can raise total efficiency above 90% where sites use exhaust heat, adding value for industrial and commercial customers.

Engineering

Durability, Degradation & Efficiency Economics

Stack degradation, thermal cycling, fuel quality and service logistics influence lifetime cost, bankability, supplier differentiation and recurring service demand.

Durability economics are central to the SOFC market because stack performance declines over time and replacement represents a significant lifecycle cost. High operating temperatures, thermal cycling, fuel impurities and material interactions can accelerate degradation. Buyers, lenders and service providers therefore place value on demonstrated stack life, degradation rates, efficiency retention and the cost and logistics of stack replacement under long-term contracts.

01
Stack degradation

Electrode and interconnect ageing reduces output and efficiency over time, determining stack replacement intervals.

02
Thermal cycling

Repeated heating and cooling stresses ceramic cells and seals, favouring continuous operation and robust designs.

03
Fuel contaminants

Sulphur, siloxanes and other impurities can poison electrodes, making fuel cleanup essential, especially for biogas.

04
Start-up and load following

Long start-up times and limited ramping require careful integration with backup power or storage.

~60%

Electrical efficiency of SOFC systems

The US Department of Energy cites electrical efficiency of about 60% for solid oxide fuel cells, among the highest of any fuel cell type, with combined heat and power raising total efficiency further.

Source: U.S. DOE Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office

Research programmes have long targeted degradation and cost. The US Department of Energy’s SOFC programme set goals to reduce system cost from more than USD 12,000 per kWe in 2019 toward USD 900 per kWe by 2030 and to cut degradation from 1–1.5% to below 0.2% per 1,000 hours. Progress against these targets underpins the economics of long-term power contracts and the competitiveness of SOFC against engines and grid supply.

Market trajectory: the market is estimated at USD 4.02 billion in 2026 and is forecast to reach USD 13.00 billion by 2034, representing a 15.8% CAGR over the forecast period.

The SOFC market is moving from niche distributed generation toward scaled on-site power infrastructure. The step up in 2026 reflects large data-center and utility programmes, while longer-term growth depends on repeat procurement, broader commercial and industrial adoption and international expansion beyond the United States and South Korea.

North America is expected to remain the largest market, supported by data-center investment, tax credits and domestic manufacturing. Asia-Pacific growth will rely on Korean procurement policy, Japanese hydrogen support and new licensed production in Taiwan, China and India, while Europe focuses on stacks, licensing and selected commercial projects.

Base-case growth conditions

Data-center and utility programmes continue, capacity expansions proceed on schedule, tax credits remain available and licensed manufacturers begin volume production in Asia.

Upside conditions

Persistent grid-connection delays, faster hydrogen and biogas supply development, falling stack costs and new utility procurement programmes expand demand beyond current framework agreements.

Downside conditions

Slower data-center investment, higher natural-gas prices, policy changes, stack durability issues or execution problems at the leading supplier could defer orders and moderate growth.

Long-term structural opportunity

Hydrogen-fuelled generation, carbon-capture-ready systems, reversible solid oxide platforms and microgrids can expand the addressable market beyond gas-fuelled on-site power.
