CuPlated HJT Battery Market Overview

Copper metallisation, low-silver contacts and heterojunction module commercialisation across 2026–2034.

Executive Market Perspective

The global CuPlated HJT Battery market stood at USD 12.00 million in 2025 and is estimated at USD 15.05 million in 2026. Revenue is forecast to reach USD 92.00 million by 2034, implying a 25.4% CAGR during 2026–2034. Asia-Pacific leads because China combines heterojunction manufacturing capacity with the first announced commercial copper-grid products. Europe is the second-largest market through photovoltaic research, industrial pilot work and demand for efficient modules.

This market measures photovoltaic silicon heterojunction cells and finished modules supplied with copper-based front or rear electrical contacts, including electroplated copper grids, pure-copper printed contacts and silver-coated-copper paste. The name ?Battery? refers to the photovoltaic cell product rather than electrochemical storage. Conventional silver-only heterojunction products, TOPCon cells, equipment sales, installation services and unrelated copper wiring are excluded. Copper-contact cells incorporated into a finished module are counted once at the relevant external product sale; equipment and downstream installation value do not enter this revenue boundary.

1.4 mg/W
Silver use in Fraunhofer ISE copper-contact HJT research

In April 2025 Fraunhofer ISE reported silicon heterojunction cells using only 1.4 milligrams of silver per watt peak after replacing the rear silver contact with copper paste and reducing front-side silver. The laboratory result demonstrates a pathway to lower precious-metal intensity.

300 MW
Reported initial copper-grid HJT production line

SPIC described a 300 MW copper-busbar pilot manufacturing line at Wenzhou, with a 600 MW expansion under development. This production reference establishes the technology as more advanced than a laboratory-only metallisation concept, although line capacity is not equivalent to sales.

510.3 GW
Global solar PV additions in 2025

IRENA reported 510.3 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity added worldwide in 2025. This creates a large potential addressable deployment environment, but only a small portion presently involves copper-metallised heterojunction cells, and installations cannot be treated as copper-HJT sales.

Analyst observation: copper contacts address a material constraint in heterojunction cell manufacturing rather than creating a separate end-use for solar electricity. HJT cells typically need low-temperature metallisation, so manufacturers are testing plated nickel-copper stacks and printed copper-containing pastes. The economic opportunity arises when those alternatives preserve contact resistance, adhesion and module reliability while reducing silver purchases.

Technology-to-revenue shift: successful laboratory contact recipes must become reproducible wafer-scale processes before they generate material module sales. A manufacturer needs stable line yield, compatible screen printing or plating tools, repeatable soldering or conductive adhesive connections, and accelerated ageing results. Huasun’s cooperation with DK Electronic Materials on copper and silver-coated copper pastes illustrates how material suppliers influence the adoption schedule.

Regional observation: China is the centre of announced copper-grid HJT commercialisation, with SPIC’s 2025 product launch and Huasun’s extensive heterojunction manufacturing footprint. European research organisations are proving alternatives to silver-heavy metallisation, including Fraunhofer ISE in Germany and TNO in the Netherlands. India, Brazil and the United States provide downstream photovoltaic demand, but their solar installation totals should not be confused with local production of copper-contact HJT cells.

Evidence base: Fraunhofer ISE — copper-contact HJT silver reduction.

CuPlated HJT Battery Market Regional Analysis

Industrial manufacturing, photovoltaic procurement and contact-technology qualification across five regions.

Asia-Pacific represented an estimated ~72% of 2025 copper-contact HJT revenue; Europe followed at an estimated ~17%. North America, South America and the Middle East & Africa are primarily emerging demand and demonstration markets.

Asia-Pacific

Chinese copper-grid commercialisation and HJT cell capacity

Asia-Pacific led the market with an estimated ~72% share in 2025.

Chinese cell manufacturers combine large wafer-processing capacity, access to conductive paste producers and a dense photovoltaic equipment ecosystem. SPIC’s 2025 copper-grid module launch gives buyers a named commercial product, while Huasun’s work with DK Electronic Materials broadens the potential supplier base for printed copper contacts. Huasun reported five manufacturing sites and 20 GW of HJT capacity, providing a substantial platform for future process conversion without implying that every line already uses copper.

Elsewhere in Asia-Pacific, India provides strong solar project demand, while Japan and South Korea contribute materials, manufacturing equipment and high-performance cell research. Huasun displayed HJT modules at Intersolar India 2025 and highlighted a negative 0.24% per degree Celsius power-temperature coefficient for hot-climate applications. Those products illustrate demand for efficient heterojunction modules but do not prove copper-only metallisation in every shipment. The region also faces aggressive TOPCon pricing, so copper-contact HJT must demonstrate lower lifetime electricity cost rather than relying on efficiency claims alone.

300 MW

China

China is the focal point of commercial copper-grid HJT manufacturing. SPIC New Energy introduced copper-grid C-HJT photovoltaic modules at SNEC in Shanghai in June 2025, describing the start of global commercial sales. Earlier reporting identified a 300 MW pilot line at Wenzhou and expansion work, while the company highlighted domestic manufacturing equipment and material integration. Huasun reported 20 GW of broader HJT production capacity across five Chinese manufacturing locations in July 2025, although that figure covers heterojunction output generally rather than copper-only cells. Its June collaboration with DK Electronic Materials explicitly targeted silver-coated copper and pure-copper pastes. Together these developments place China ahead in process industrialisation, but yield, shipment mix and verified copper-contact product sales remain the commercial differentiators. China’s integrated cell, paste and module suppliers can qualify the complete copper-contact process more rapidly than isolated technology developers. Buyers still need serial production evidence, bankable warranties and independently documented electrical performance before broad procurement.

SPIC copper-grid commercial launch

Europe

Fraunhofer and TNO lead low-silver contact qualification

Europe held an estimated ~17% of global copper-contact HJT revenue in 2025.

Germany and the Netherlands host influential research into copper metallisation for heterojunction photovoltaics. In April 2025 Fraunhofer ISE announced a screen-printed HJT design using 1.4 mg of silver per watt peak, roughly one tenth of the then-current industrial standard, while retaining strong conversion efficiency. The institute replaced rear-side silver with copper paste and combined silver-copper paste with fine front contacts. Its work with industrial partners shows how copper-based contact processes can be adapted to established manufacturing methods.

TNO in the Netherlands reported fully copper-metallised HJT cells in September 2025 using screen printing on both sides, with performance within one percent of conventional silver-contact cells. That result supports a different equipment route from electroplating and offers potential compatibility with installed printing machinery. European developers must nevertheless prove that the contacts tolerate humidity, thermal cycling, field loads and years of module operation. The EU photovoltaic market provides a demand base, but local copper-HJT revenue depends on industrial production decisions and imported module specifications.

North America

Qualification-led adoption in a large solar installation market

North America is a smaller copper-contact HJT market, led by module procurement rather than domestic copper-grid mass production.

The United States installed around 47 GW of photovoltaic capacity during 2024 according to IEA PVPS, creating a substantial addressable project pipeline for high-efficiency cells. Utility developers primarily compare delivered module prices, energy yield, financing terms and warranty security, not metallisation technology in isolation. Copper-contact HJT suppliers seeking this market must document compliance with electrical and fire-safety standards, module bankability and manufacturing traceability. Import policies and domestic-content incentives can affect procurement, but a cell with copper fingers is not necessarily produced locally.

Canada contributes research capacity and specialist module demand, while Mexico offers an industrial and commercial solar customer base. North American buyers often require independent accelerated ageing tests and field performance histories before financing a new module design. Copper introduces questions around oxidation, diffusion barriers and electrical contact adhesion, which manufacturers must resolve through barrier layers, encapsulation and production controls. A laboratory cell efficiency figure cannot replace those qualifications. Regional adoption should therefore follow carefully selected pilot projects, supplier-backed warranties and repeat orders rather than a rapid conversion of all HJT imports.

South America

Brazilian HJT procurement and high-temperature project economics

South America is an emerging downstream destination for high-efficiency heterojunction modules, particularly in Brazil.

Brazil added substantial photovoltaic capacity in 2024, and Huasun presented its HJT product portfolio at Intersolar South America in September 2025. The company cited a Brazilian system-operator outlook in which solar capacity could rise from 51.7 GW at the end of 2024 to 88.2 GW by 2029. It also announced a framework supply agreement with Arax? Engenharia, demonstrating commercial interest in heterojunction modules. These are useful indicators of regional buyer demand, but the announcement did not identify all supplied modules as copper-metallised.

Hot climates and strong solar irradiation can favour modules with a low power-temperature coefficient and high bifacial response. Huasun described a negative 0.24% per degree Celsius temperature coefficient for its Himalaya products, an attribute relevant to Brazilian utility and industrial installations. Copper-contact HJT could offer further manufacturing-cost advantages if it retains the same electrical output and reliability as silver-contact designs. Import financing, currency exposure and local project connection queues remain important commercial constraints.

Middle East & Africa

Solar expansion creates a future qualification market

The Middle East & Africa represents a developing destination for copper-contact HJT modules, not yet a leading manufacturing base.

Large solar projects in the Gulf and expanding African electrification programmes create potential demand for high-efficiency photovoltaic technologies. IEA reporting on 2025 renewables describes a sharp rise in solar additions across several emerging regions, including Saudi Arabia and parts of Africa. Project developers in desert climates emphasise output under high temperatures, soiling resistance and dependable long-term module warranties. Heterojunction technology can compete on temperature behaviour and bifaciality, but copper contacts require separate qualification against corrosion and moisture ingress.

Procurement conditions vary between utility tenders, distributed commercial systems and remote electrification. Large projects may favour proven suppliers with financing support and multi-year performance guarantees, whereas smaller buyers prioritise installed cost and replacement availability. Copper metallisation could ultimately reduce dependence on volatile silver prices and make advanced cells more competitive, but the region lacks the integrated HJT manufacturing ecosystem found in China. Import lead times, quality assurance, module certification and service arrangements therefore shape near-term adoption.

Competition

CuPlated HJT Battery Market Competitive Landscape

Cell producers, module brands, metallisation equipment and paste suppliers shape the copper-contact HJT value chain.

Competition is still centred on technology qualification and manufacturing integration rather than a mature roster of copper-only cell sellers. SPIC has announced a commercial copper-grid module, while Huasun and Risen market large-scale heterojunction products and have published silver-reduction initiatives. SC Solar supplies plating equipment and DK Electronic Materials works on copper-containing pastes. Equipment and paste sales are outside the measured cell-and-module market, but those firms are important enabling participants.

Commercial Copper-Grid Modules

SPIC New Energy introduced C-HJT modules in June 2025.

Large HJT Manufacturers

Huasun Energy and Risen Energy supply HJT products and pursue reduced-silver contacts.

Plating Equipment

SC Solar offers an HJT plating metallisation production system.

Conductive Paste Ecosystem

DK Electronic Materials partners with Huasun on copper-containing formulations.

SPIC’s launch gives it an early commercial reference, while broader HJT manufacturers have more extensive established distribution channels. Huasun reported 20 GW of HJT capacity and cumulative shipments above 13 GW in July 2025, but these figures are not a copper-contact sales total. Risen’s Hyper-ion module range emphasises efficiency and low-silver material use; its publicly described reduction pathway should not be treated as proof that every module is electroplated.

Technology partnerships can be decisive because metallisation performance depends on wafer surfaces, conductive paste rheology, plating chemistry and interconnection materials. Huasun’s collaboration with DK Electronic Materials targets new silver-coated copper and pure copper pastes, while SC Solar describes a horizontal in-line plating machine rated at 3,600 wafers per hour or more. Such equipment specifications establish manufacturing capability, not achieved sales. A producer that can integrate these steps without lowering yield or module lifetime may secure an advantage in the next procurement cycle.

Evidence: Huasun — copper-paste partnership.

Market Growth Drivers, Restraints & Commercial Factors

Silver substitution supports copper HJT while qualification costs and fierce photovoltaic price competition restrain adoption.

Copper-contact heterojunction photovoltaics are developing within a rapidly expanding but price-sensitive solar industry. The value proposition is lower silver intensity while retaining high cell efficiency and module lifetime. SPIC’s commercial copper-grid announcement, Fraunhofer ISE’s fine-line copper-paste research and TNO’s fully copper-printed cells provide distinct evidence of technical progress. Buyers still need production-scale reliability, repeatable yields and bankable warranties before moving procurement from conventional modules. The outlook therefore depends on process conversion as much as new solar capacity.

Demand Formation — solar growth enlarges the addressable base. IEA PVPS reported more than 2.26 TW of cumulative photovoltaic installations at the end of 2024, with hundreds of gigawatts added annually. That scale makes even a small metallisation transition commercially meaningful. Copper-contact HJT competes for a subset of advanced-cell procurement, particularly where bifacial energy yield and thermal performance support premium positioning.

Manufacturing Economics — silver reduction is the immediate attraction. Fraunhofer ISE’s 2025 experiment reached 1.4 mg of silver per watt peak using silver-copper front contacts and pure copper on the rear. The material saving can reduce exposure to silver supply and price volatility, but plating equipment, process control, conductive barrier layers and scrap can offset part of the benefit.

Commercial Qualification — reliability is a purchase condition. TNO demonstrated fully copper-metallised heterojunction cells with performance close to silver-contact references in September 2025. Laboratory conversion efficiency is only one qualification milestone. Module buyers also require thermal cycling, damp heat, mechanical-load and long-term field tests, alongside traceable production batches.

Pricing and Procurement — mature alternatives limit premiums. HJT competes against TOPCon and back-contact modules in utility, rooftop and specialty solar projects. Procurement teams compare delivered cost per watt, energy yield, warranties and financing rather than cell metallisation alone. China’s dense production ecosystem may shorten copper process adoption, but oversupply in photovoltaic manufacturing constrains margins.

Evidence: TNO — fully copper-metallised HJT performance.

Segmentation

Market Segmentation by Metallisation Route

Contact formation is divided by the dominant copper integration process.

Electroplated Copper Grid represented an estimated ~54% of 2025 copper-contact HJT revenue.

The two route categories are electroplated copper grids and screen-printed copper-containing contacts. Both reduce dependence on silver, but they have different factory equipment, adhesion, chemistry and qualification requirements. Electroplating adds deposition steps, whereas printing can make greater use of existing metallisation infrastructure.

Electroplated Copper Grid

Electroplated grids deposit copper conductors onto prepared contact surfaces, often using nickel or other barrier layers to manage adhesion and diffusion. SPIC commercialised copper-grid C-HJT modules in June 2025 and described domestic equipment integration. Narrow fingers can reduce optical shading, but plating bath management, masking, uniformity and wastewater handling add operational complexity. This route is attractive when cell makers can sustain low resistance and high yield across large wafers. Its adoption depends on repeatable contact quality and long-term module reliability, not merely the metal cost difference.

Screen-Printed Copper and Silver-Coated Copper Contacts

Printed metallisation uses conductive pastes containing copper or silver-coated copper and can retain familiar screen-printing workflows. Fraunhofer ISE reported 1.4 mg/W silver consumption in April 2025 with pure copper rear contacts and a mixed front paste, while TNO demonstrated fully copper-printed HJT cells in September. Paste formulation, fine-line screen openings, curing temperature and contact resistivity determine process success. Huasun and DK Electronic Materials are developing copper-containing materials for future HJT manufacturing. This category can scale through installed printing lines if durability and consistent adhesion are demonstrated.

Segmentation

Market Segmentation by Application

Deployment is classified by the final photovoltaic system served.

Utility-Scale Solar was the largest application at an estimated ~58% of 2025 revenue.

Utility-scale arrays dominate high-volume procurement, commercial rooftops value energy yield on constrained sites, and residential or specialty installations place additional emphasis on appearance, durability and local service. Each application evaluates copper-contact HJT as a complete certified module rather than as a metal substitution alone.

Utility-Scale Solar

Large ground-mounted photovoltaic projects are the leading application because module volumes are high and small changes in lifetime electricity yield can materially affect project economics. Huasun’s Himalaya high-power HJT products and SPIC’s copper-grid module launch target the broader high-efficiency solar market. Developers compare bifacial gain, thermal behaviour, warranty provisions and delivered price per watt. Copper contacts can improve factory economics if they preserve output and reliability, but procurement teams need verified module specifications. A project using ordinary HJT cells does not automatically belong to the copper-contact category.

Commercial and Industrial Rooftops

Factories, warehouses and business parks value high power density because usable roof area and structural capacity are limited. Copper-contact HJT modules may offer attractive energy yield where high temperatures reduce the performance of less efficient products. Buyers also scrutinise fire classification, mechanical loading, installer support and the ability to replace modules later. The premium for new metallisation is difficult to recover unless it lowers module cost or improves energy production. Local distributors and EPC firms influence product selection, while cell manufacturers capture revenue when copper-contact modules are sold into these projects.

Residential and Specialty Installations

Residential rooftops, agrivoltaics and vertical photovoltaic systems form a smaller but technically diverse segment. Huasun’s Kunlun modules illustrate interest in bifacial vertical arrays, including agricultural settings where light distribution and mounting geometry matter. Residential buyers focus on warranties, aesthetics, safety and reliable installers rather than contact chemistry. Copper-contact HJT can enter these niches after standard module testing and supply-chain support are established. Specialty projects may accept higher module prices for measured energy yield, but early adoption is unlikely to represent the same shipment scale as utility solar.

Segmentation

Market Segmentation by Wafer Format

Wafer dimensions affect equipment compatibility and module design.

Large-Format G12 and G12R wafers accounted for an estimated ~67% of 2025 revenue.

Large-format HJT wafers are important for high-power utility modules, while other commercial wafer formats serve retrofit and distributed applications. Copper plating uniformity and printing registration must remain stable across the selected format, making wafer handling and breakage central to manufacturing economics.

Large-Format G12 and G12R

G12 and G12R heterojunction formats support high-power module configurations and are prominent in Huasun’s manufacturing portfolio. Larger wafers increase the importance of uniform metallisation, contact adhesion and low breakage during handling. SC Solar describes plating equipment compatible with 210 by 210 millimetre wafers and an output of at least 3,600 pieces per hour. Copper-based contact processes that maintain electrical consistency across the full wafer can improve manufacturing economics. Buyers assess the finished module’s efficiency and reliability; wafer size alone does not establish whether copper is used.

Other Commercial Wafer Formats

Smaller and rectangular wafer formats remain relevant to rooftop dimensions, specialised products and existing manufacturing lines. These formats can be useful for introducing copper printing or plating in controlled production trials because manufacturers may adapt installed tools rather than convert their largest lines immediately. However, each change in wafer geometry requires validation of contact layout, printing registration and mechanical stress. Cell producers must also coordinate busbar and interconnection design with module assembly. Demand follows qualified products that offer predictable lifetime energy yield, not simply the availability of a copper metallisation recipe.

Segmentation

Market Segmentation by Buyer Channel

The channel dimension distinguishes internal module integration from independent cell or module sales.

Integrated Module Manufacturing represented an estimated ~63% of 2025 revenue.

Copper-contact cells can be integrated into a manufacturer’s own modules or supplied to external module assemblers and project channels. This distinction affects qualification responsibility, margin capture and the ability to track product-level copper content.

Integrated Module Manufacturing

Vertically integrated producers coordinate wafer processing, contact formation, module assembly and final product testing. SPIC’s commercial C-HJT module launch is an example of presenting a finished product whose copper-grid technology is part of the supplier proposition. Integration can accelerate reliability feedback because the same organisation controls cell and module changes. It also enables more direct accounting of copper-contact module shipments. The measured market counts the externally sold finished product once, rather than adding an internal cell transfer to the value of the same module.

Third-Party Cell and Module Supply

Independent cell sales and module distribution create a different commercial path for copper-contact HJT. Cell suppliers must provide detailed specifications covering contact resistance, solderability, barrier layers and process stability so external module assemblers can qualify the product. Finished modules may also be sold through distributors or directly to developers. This channel expands geographic reach but adds interfaces between manufacturing and warranty responsibility. Buyers often require traceable bill-of-materials records to confirm that supplied batches use the specified copper-contact design rather than conventional silver-only HJT.

Supply Chain

Copper HJT Supply Chain, Manufacturing Capacity & Procurement

Wafers, passivation layers, transparent conductors, copper contacts and module assembly determine commercial yield.

Production starts with n-type crystalline silicon wafers, thin passivating layers and transparent conductive oxide coatings. Manufacturers then form conductive contacts using either printing pastes or plated metal structures before connecting cells into modules. Copper can reduce silver consumption, but its use changes adhesion, barrier and interconnection requirements. Fraunhofer ISE’s printed approach and SPIC’s copper-grid route illustrate distinct manufacturing choices. Huasun’s partnership with DK Electronic Materials adds a paste-development link, while SC Solar supplies plating equipment rated for industrial wafer throughput.

Manufacturing capacity figures require careful interpretation. Huasun reported 20 GW of total HJT capacity in July 2025, but this does not establish copper-contact capacity or realised copper-cell revenue. SPIC’s copper-grid pilot line and commercial module announcement provide more directly relevant evidence, though nameplate throughput is not shipment value. Procurement involves qualification samples, production-batch consistency, module certification, warranty review and customer acceptance. Price competition in the wider photovoltaic market makes it important to track cost per saleable watt rather than theoretical silver savings.

Evidence: SC Solar — HJT plating equipment throughput.

Applications

Application Trends: Utility Solar, Rooftops and Vertical PV

Commercial demand depends on energy yield, module warranties and the competitiveness of copper-contact manufacturing.

Utility-scale procurement creates the largest volume opportunity because a single project can purchase hundreds of thousands of modules. IEA PVPS recorded a record global photovoltaic installation market in 2024, with China accounting for most additions. Copper-contact HJT suppliers can address this demand when their modules meet price, certification and performance thresholds. High bifaciality and a favourable temperature coefficient are relevant to project energy yield, but those attributes also exist in conventional HJT products.

Commercial rooftops and vertical agrivoltaics create a different value proposition. Roof constraints favour efficient modules, while vertical systems can shift generation toward morning and afternoon demand periods. Huasun described its Kunlun vertical HJT design and a 5.2 MW agrivoltaic installation in Germany during 2025. Those projects demonstrate the application potential of heterojunction cells, not verified copper-contact shipments. A copper-metallised version must undergo the same mechanical, electrical and weathering qualifications. Installers and project lenders need consistent specifications, warranty support and evidence that a novel contact design does not introduce hidden lifetime costs.

Evidence: Huasun — vertical HJT and German agrivoltaics.

Copper-contact HJT cells use passivating amorphous-silicon layers on crystalline silicon and a transparent conductive layer to collect current. Metallisation creates low-resistance paths from the cell surface to the module interconnections. Electroplated copper grids require suitable seed or barrier layers and precise pattern formation; printed copper contacts depend on paste formulation, screen geometry and curing. Fraunhofer ISE used very fine front-side printing patterns to lower silver demand while preserving efficiency. The cell’s value is realised only after reliable interconnection and encapsulation in a module designed for long field exposure.

The commercial value chain separates cell producers, paste manufacturers, plating equipment suppliers, module assemblers and project owners. The measured revenue boundary includes qualifying copper-contact cells and modules sold externally, not the value of printing screens, plating lines or installed solar farms. Integrated companies may transfer cells internally, but counting both the cell and finished module would overstate the market. Technology risk concentrates around contact resistance, diffusion, adhesion and durability. A module that passes qualification can support long-term supply contracts, while process defects may create warranty liabilities that outweigh savings in precious metal.

Engineering

Copper Metallisation Reliability, Efficiency & Lifetime Economics

Adhesion, contact resistance, silver intensity and accelerated ageing determine bankable product performance.

The engineering case for copper-metallised heterojunction cells rests on a combination of conductivity, cost and long-term stability. Fraunhofer ISE reported 1.4 mg/W silver use in an experimental printed design, while TNO demonstrated a fully copper-printed cell with performance within one percent of its silver-contact reference. These are meaningful technical results, but large module orders also require predictable factory yields, moisture protection and interconnection reliability. Manufacturers must ensure that copper diffusion or corrosion does not damage the cell over decades of field exposure.

Copper diffusion

Barrier-layer defects may degrade cell performance.

02
Contact adhesion

Thermal cycling can weaken poorly bonded grids.

03

Fraunhofer ISE silver intensity in copper-contact HJT research

Fraunhofer ISE achieved 1.4 milligrams of silver per watt peak by combining a silver-copper front paste with pure copper on the rear of a silicon heterojunction cell. The result is a technical benchmark rather than an industry-wide production average.

Source: Fraunhofer ISE, 28 April 2025

The choice between plating and printing affects environmental management and capital spending. Plating can produce narrow conductors with limited shading but needs deposition chemistry and wastewater controls. Printing can reuse established equipment yet requires copper-containing pastes that form stable low-resistance contacts at temperatures compatible with HJT passivation. SC Solar specifies high-throughput plating machinery, while Fraunhofer and TNO have demonstrated printing routes.

Outlook

CuPlated HJT Battery Market Outlook, 2026–2034

Copper metallisation adoption, supplier qualification and the transition from pilot products to repeat module orders.

The CuPlated HJT Battery market is estimated at USD 15.05 million in 2026 and forecast to reach USD 92.00 million in 2034, representing a 25.4% CAGR. The forecast reflects a small specialist product category within the much larger photovoltaic industry. Copper contacts offer a pathway to reduce silver intensity, but the growth trajectory depends on production yield, reliability testing and price competition with conventional HJT, TOPCon and back-contact modules. Asia-Pacific is expected to remain the manufacturing centre, with Europe supporting materials and process innovation.

Direction of Travel

Market trajectory: the 2025 base is USD 12.00 million, the 2026 estimate is USD 15.05 million and the 2034 forecast is USD 92.00 million, with 25.4% CAGR for 2026–2034. The largest uncertainty is the rate of conversion from pilot and specialist copper-contact products to repeat orders on qualified industrial lines.

Technology competition will occur between electroplated copper grids and screen-printed copper-containing contacts. SPIC has announced commercial copper-grid modules, while Fraunhofer ISE and TNO have demonstrated low-silver or fully copper-printed approaches. Manufacturers that achieve stable cell efficiency, high throughput and low scrap will be able to translate material savings into module prices.

Regional expansion will follow established photovoltaic supply channels. Chinese manufacturers have the strongest opportunity to scale copper-contact cell production; European research centres and project buyers can accelerate testing and qualification. Export markets in India, Brazil, North America and the Middle East offer applications for efficient modules, but adoption will depend on the precise product specification supplied.

Base-case growth conditions

Manufacturers gradually convert qualified HJT product lines to copper contacts while preserving warranties and factory yield.

Upside conditions

Silver prices and demonstrated copper reliability accelerate contact substitution in large-format HJT cells.

Downside conditions

Copper corrosion, yield losses or lower TOPCon prices delay the commercial transition.

Long-term structural opportunity

Copper and low-silver contact platforms support high-efficiency HJT and future silicon tandem photovoltaic designs.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to the principal commercial questions about copper-metallised HJT photovoltaic cells.

What is the CuPlated HJT Battery market size?

The global market stood at USD 12.00 million in 2025, with an estimated USD 15.05 million in 2026 and a forecast of USD 92.00 million by 2034. The implied CAGR for 2026–2034 is 25.4%. The category covers copper-contact heterojunction photovoltaic cells and modules, not lithium battery storage or all conventional HJT products.

What does CuPlated HJT Battery mean?

It describes silicon heterojunction photovoltaic cells or modules using copper-based electrical contacts. Copper may be electroplated into gridlines or incorporated into printed metallisation pastes. The word Battery appears in the product title but refers to photovoltaic cell technology, not an electrochemical battery pack. Conventional silver-only HJT, TOPCon and downstream installation revenue are outside this market definition.

Why replace silver with copper in HJT cells?

Copper can reduce dependence on silver, a valuable material used in solar-cell contacts. Fraunhofer ISE reported a 2025 research result using only 1.4 mg of silver per watt peak after introducing copper-containing contacts. Manufacturers still need to control electrical resistance, diffusion, adhesion and moisture-related reliability.

Which companies participate in copper-contact HJT?

SPIC New Energy has announced commercial copper-grid C-HJT modules. Huasun Energy works with DK Electronic Materials on copper-containing metallisation pastes, and Risen Energy markets reduced-silver HJT modules. SC Solar offers plating equipment used in the broader manufacturing ecosystem. These roles are not identical: equipment and paste sales are excluded from the measured cell-and-module market.

Which region leads copper-contact HJT revenue?

Asia-Pacific is the largest regional market at an estimated ~72% of 2025 revenue, led by Chinese photovoltaic cell manufacturing and SPIC’s copper-grid commercial launch. Europe follows at an estimated ~17% and contributes important research through Fraunhofer ISE and TNO. Other regions represent potential module buyers, but total solar installation capacity does not establish copper-contact cell production.

What are the main copper metallisation technologies?

The main approaches are electroplated copper gridlines and screen-printed copper or silver-coated-copper contacts. Plating can create narrow conductive features but requires deposition chemistry and specialised process control. Printing can reuse familiar factory methods if suitable pastes are available. Fraunhofer ISE and TNO have demonstrated printed routes, while SPIC has commercialised copper-grid modules.

Where are copper-contact HJT modules used?

Potential applications include utility-scale solar plants, commercial and industrial rooftops, residential systems and specialty vertical agrivoltaic installations. Utility-scale solar is the leading application at an estimated ~58% of 2025 revenue. Buyers compare module efficiency, bifacial output, temperature performance, warranty and delivered cost per watt. Copper metallisation is an internal cell feature and must be verified in the supplied product.

What could slow growth through 2034?

The largest risks are contact corrosion, diffusion, weak adhesion, plating or printing yield losses, and slow certification of new module designs. Photovoltaic oversupply and low-priced TOPCon alternatives can also limit the premium available to HJT suppliers. Copper-contact products will expand most reliably when manufacturers publish credible performance evidence and demonstrate repeatable output on commercial lines.
