Executive Market Perspective

The 12V nickel-cadmium battery market is estimated at USD 250 million in 2025 and USD 256 million in 2026, with the report forecasting expansion to USD 314 million by 2034, representing a 2.6% CAGR over 2026–2034. Asia-Pacific is identified as the largest regional market, supported by India’s rapidly growing industrial nickel-cadmium demand from power utilities, railways and oil and gas, together with China’s large domestic manufacturing base for pocket-plate cells and battery blocks.

The market covers 12-volt nickel-cadmium batteries built from ten 1.2V cells in series, including vented pocket-plate and fibre-plate monoblocs, sintered-plate batteries and sealed battery packs. Applications span emergency lighting, substation and switchgear tripping supplies, generator engine starting, rail and metro auxiliary systems, oil and gas installations, telecom sites and aviation ground and onboard uses. Portable consumer NiCd products restricted by cadmium rules, and higher-voltage strings sold as individual cells, are excluded from the measured boundary.

USD 809 Mn+
World NiCd accumulator exports, 2023

World exports of nickel-cadmium accumulators under HS 850730 exceeded USD 809 million in 2023, led by the United States, France, Sweden and Germany, indicating a stable industrial market concentrated among a small number of specialist producers in Europe, North America and Asia.

30%+
HBL pocket-plate NiCd growth, FY2025

HBL Engineering reported growth of more than 30% in its pocket-plate NiCd business in fiscal 2025, helped by Power Grid Corporation of India switching substation batteries from VRLA lead-acid to nickel-cadmium for greater reliability.

?40 to +60–C
Fibre-plate NiCd operating range

Hoppecke’s FNC fibre-structure NiCd batteries operate from ?40–C to +60–C with up to 25-year service life, the robustness that keeps NiCd specified for critical industrial backup in harsh operating environments.

Analyst observation: the 12V NiCd battery is a specialist industrial product rather than a consumer item. Demand comes from applications where failure is unacceptable and conditions are harsh: emergency lighting in public buildings, substation protection, engine starting for standby generators, rail auxiliaries and offshore installations. In these uses buyers prioritise reliability, temperature tolerance and long service life over upfront cost, which sustains steady replacement demand even as other chemistries gain share.

Technology-to-revenue shift: pocket-plate and fibre-plate NiCd batteries offer service lives of 20 years or more, tolerate deep discharge and operate across extreme temperatures, but they are heavier and more expensive than lead-acid and face growing competition from lithium-ion. Revenue is therefore shifting toward higher-specification industrial blocks, sealed low-maintenance designs and long-term service contracts, while low-end consumer NiCd volumes continue to decline under cadmium restrictions.

Regional observation: Asia-Pacific and Europe together account for most 2025 revenue. India’s utilities, railways and oil and gas sector are driving the fastest growth, while Europe hosts several leading producers and enforces strict cadmium rules that confine NiCd to industrial uses. North America is both the largest exporter and importer of NiCd accumulators, and the Middle East & Africa relies on NiCd for metro, desalination and oil and gas projects.

HBL Engineering FY2025 MD&A

Europe

Producer hub with strict cadmium regulation

Europe accounted for an estimated ~30% of global 2025 revenue.

Europe is both a major producer and a significant user of industrial nickel-cadmium batteries. France, Sweden and Germany were three of the four largest exporters of NiCd accumulators in 2023, reflecting Saft’s plants in Bordeaux and Oskarshamn, Hoppecke in Germany and GAZ in Zwickau. Demand comes from rail and metro rolling stock, utility substations, offshore oil and gas platforms, emergency lighting in public buildings and aviation, where long service life and reliability in extreme conditions justify the higher cost of nickel-cadmium technology over the full operating life of the installation, often two decades or more.

Regulation is a defining feature of the European market. The EU Batteries Regulation, applicable from February 2024, carries over the 0.002% cadmium limit for portable batteries, confining NiCd to industrial, rail, aviation and similar uses. LightingEurope has argued that dedicated emergency lighting batteries should be classified as industrial batteries, which would keep NiCd emergency packs outside the portable-battery restriction. Ownership changes also continue, with GAZ’s NiCd business spun off as GAZ Energy a.s. in January 2025 under Bochemie Group ownership, reflecting continued consolidation among European producers.

North America

Major producer, trader and defence user

The United States was both the largest exporter, at about USD 150 million, and the largest importer, at about USD 96 million, of nickel-cadmium accumulators in 2023, reflecting two-way trade in specialised products.

North America combines established production with steady industrial and defence demand. Saft America’s Valdosta, Georgia, operations supply aviation and military batteries, and in April 2025 Saft won a US Defense Logistics Agency contract of up to USD 7.54 million for H-1, Seahawk and CH-53 helicopter batteries. Utilities, rail operators and petrochemical plants use NiCd for switchgear tripping, engine starting and backup where reliability under heat or cold is essential, sustaining replacement demand across a large installed base of utility, industrial and transport sites across the United States and Canada.

Recycling and cadmium supply support the regional market. One Ohio company recovers cadmium metal from consumer and industrial NiCd batteries, and US refinery cadmium output was about 200 tonnes in 2025. Competition from lithium-ion and advanced lead-acid batteries is strongest in North America, particularly in telecom and UPS, so growth depends on applications where NiCd’s tolerance of extreme temperatures, deep discharge and long standby periods remains decisive for operators managing critical infrastructure, protection relays and safety systems in extreme climates.

Middle East & Africa

Metro, desalination and oil and gas projects

Saft is supplying MRX nickel batteries for 92 eight-car trains on Cairo Metro Line 4, with deliveries scheduled from May 2025 to the end of 2026, a significant regional reference.

Middle East & Africa relies on nickel-cadmium batteries for infrastructure that operates in high temperatures and demands long service life. Metro and rail projects such as Cairo Metro Line 4 specify nickel batteries for backup and auxiliary power, while seawater desalination plants, refineries and oil and gas facilities use pocket-plate NiCd for control systems, switchgear and emergency power. Changhong cites NiCd references in UAE desalination and an Iraqi refinery renovation, illustrating demand from large industrial projects across the Gulf region and North Africa, where operating temperatures routinely exceed 40–C.

The region’s demand is project-driven and tied to infrastructure investment. Oil and gas operators value NiCd’s ability to withstand heat, vibration and long periods on float charge without frequent maintenance, which reduces lifecycle cost at remote sites. Procurement typically runs through engineering, procurement and construction contractors and national energy companies, favouring suppliers with proven references and international certifications. Competition from lithium-ion is growing in newer telecom and solar applications, but critical industrial uses continue to specify nickel-cadmium for its proven field record and predictable lifecycle cost.

South America

Utility and mining backup applications

Companhia Energ–tica de Bras–lia converted 34 distribution substations from lead-acid to Saft Uptimax nickel pocket-plate backup batteries, a reference for NiCd use in regional utilities seeking lower maintenance.

South America is the smallest regional market, with demand concentrated in utilities, mining, oil and gas and rail. Brazilian utilities use nickel-cadmium batteries for substation backup, where long life and reliability in tropical heat reduce maintenance and replacement costs. Mining operations and oil and gas installations across the region are further users of NiCd for critical control and emergency systems, typically supplied by international manufacturers through local distributors and engineering contractors with service capability and spare-parts inventories, which are critical for remote operations.

Peru and Mexico are notable refined cadmium producers, at about 600 and 1,000 tonnes respectively in 2025, but battery manufacturing in the region is limited and most products are imported. Import duties, currency volatility and long lead times raise costs, while lithium-ion and valve-regulated lead-acid batteries compete in telecom and solar applications. Growth will depend on utility grid investment, mining expansion and rail projects that require dependable backup power in demanding environments, along with the availability of local technical support and recycling routes for spent cadmium batteries, which remain limited in several countries.

Market Growth Drivers, Restraints & Commercial Factors

The market is supported by critical backup demand and long service life, but growth is constrained by cadmium regulation, lithium-ion substitution and higher costs.

The 12V nickel-cadmium battery market is mature and specialised. Demand rests on critical industrial applications where reliability, temperature tolerance and service life outweigh cost, while consumer uses have largely disappeared under cadmium restrictions. Growth depends on infrastructure investment in utilities, rail and energy, regulatory treatment of emergency lighting batteries and the pace at which lithium-ion and advanced lead-acid alternatives win specifications in established applications and new installations.

Demand Formation — Critical infrastructure sustains replacement. Utilities, rail operators, oil and gas facilities and public buildings rely on NiCd batteries for protection, control and emergency power. Power Grid Corporation of India’s switch from VRLA to NiCd shows that some operators are moving back to nickel-cadmium for reliability in substations.

Product Economics — Long life offsets higher upfront cost. Pocket-plate and fibre-plate NiCd batteries offer 20 to 25-year service lives and wide temperature ranges, reducing replacement frequency and maintenance visits at remote, offshore or hard-to-access sites compared with lead-acid batteries in similar duty, lowering total cost of ownership.

Pricing & Procurement — Specification-led buying limits price competition. NiCd batteries are typically specified by engineers in tenders for rail, utility and oil and gas projects, where references and certification weigh heavily. A 12V 4Ah NiCd emergency lighting pack retails at about NZD 208, reflecting specialist pricing and low production volumes.

Supply Chain — Cadmium and recycling shape costs. Cadmium is mainly consumed in NiCd batteries, with world refinery output of about 23,000 tonnes in 2025. Closed-loop recycling, such as Saft’s Oskarshamn operation recovering more than 75% of battery weight, secures materials, lowers costs and supports compliance.

Regulatory Influence — Cadmium limits confine NiCd to industrial uses. The EU Batteries Regulation limits portable batteries to 0.002% cadmium, ending most consumer uses, while industrial applications remain permitted. The classification of emergency lighting batteries as industrial is a key regulatory question for the segment.

Real Constraint — Lithium-ion and VRLA compete for specifications. USGS notes that lithium chemistries have replaced NiCd in consumer markets, and lithium-ion and valve-regulated lead-acid batteries increasingly compete in telecom, UPS and solar uses, limiting NiCd growth to applications where its robustness remains essential.

Evidence: USGS — Cadmium.

Segmentation

Market Segmentation by Type

The Type segmentation follows the electrode constructions defined in the report scope.

Bag Type (pocket-plate) batteries represented an estimated ~55% of 2025 market revenue, making this the largest By Type revenue segment.

By Type, the market is divided by electrode construction. Plate design determines power capability, cycle life, maintenance needs, cost and suitability for standby, starting or high-rate applications, so each construction serves distinct customer groups and procurement specifications.

Bag Type (Pocket Plate)

Active material is held in perforated steel pockets, producing very robust electrodes with long life and tolerance to abuse. Segmentation

Market Segmentation by Capacity

Capacity segmentation reflects battery size and typical installations.

Batteries of 10–100 Ah represented an estimated ~41% of 2025 market revenue, reflecting engine starting, switchgear and industrial backup blocks.

By Capacity, the market is segmented into three ranges that correspond to distinct product formats and applications. Capacity determines whether a product is a sealed pack, a monobloc or an assembly of larger vented cells, and therefore its price, maintenance profile and sales channel.

Below 10 Ah

Sealed packs for emergency luminaires, alarms and small control systems, such as 12V 4Ah packs built from ten D-size cells, replaced periodically as part of building maintenance programmes.

10–100 Ah

Monoblocs and cell sets for generator and diesel engine starting, switchgear tripping, rail auxiliaries and industrial control backup, the core of industrial 12V demand across all regions and the most competitive range on price.

Above 100 Ah

Large vented pocket-plate cells assembled into 12V batteries for substations, oil and gas and long-duration backup, with capacities up to about 1,100Ah per cell, used where long backup durations are required.

Segmentation

Market Segmentation by Product Format

Format segmentation reflects how 12V NiCd batteries are packaged and supplied.

Monobloc Batteries represented an estimated ~44% of 2025 market revenue, reflecting demand for compact 12V blocks in industrial backup.

By Product Format, the market is segmented into Sealed Battery Packs, Monobloc Batteries and Assembled Cell Sets. Format determines installation method, maintenance requirements and the channel through which products are sold to equipment makers, contractors and end users.

Sealed Battery Packs

Assemblies of sealed cylindrical cells with protective sleeves and connectors for emergency lighting and small equipment, supplied to luminaire makers and maintenance contractors in high volumes at relatively low unit prices, with replacement cycles of several years.

Monobloc Batteries

Multi-cell 12V blocks in a single robust container, such as Changhong’s 12V blocks, for engine starting, UPS and switchgear, offering simple installation and replacement and compact footprints in cabinets.

Assembled Cell Sets

Individual vented cells connected in series with intercell connectors to form 12V batteries for large-capacity industrial and utility installations, typically supplied with racks, monitoring and long-term service support.

Supply Chain

Supply Chain, Manufacturing Capacity & Procurement

Nickel and cadmium supply, plate manufacturing, recycling and engineered procurement shape how 12V NiCd demand converts into revenue.

The 12V nickel-cadmium supply chain begins with nickel hydroxide for positive electrodes, cadmium for negative electrodes, potassium hydroxide electrolyte and steel or plastic containers. Cadmium is mainly consumed in NiCd batteries, and world refinery output was about 23,000 tonnes in 2025, with China producing about 9,500 tonnes. The Indian Bureau of Mines has estimated that nickel-cadmium batteries account for about three-quarters of global cadmium consumption, linking battery demand closely to the cadmium market.

Manufacturing is concentrated among a small number of specialists. Saft produces nickel batteries in France, Sweden, India and the United States; HBL manufactures in India; Hoppecke and GAZ produce in Germany, with GAZ electrode plates made at Bochemie’s Bohum–n plant in the Czech Republic since 2020; and Chinese producers such as Changhong and EverExceed supply export markets. World exports exceeded USD 809 million in 2023, with the top five exporters accounting for about 71% of the total.

Procurement is specification-led and long-term. Utilities, rail operators and oil and gas companies buy NiCd batteries through engineered tenders requiring certification, references and lifecycle support, while emergency lighting packs are supplied in volume to luminaire makers and maintenance contractors. Recycling is integral: Saft’s Oskarshamn site recycles NiCd batteries from several Nordic countries and the UK, and cadmium toxicity requires controlled collection and processing throughout the product life cycle.

Evidence: USGS — Cadmium.

Regulation

Cadmium Regulation, Recycling & Substitution Outlook

Cadmium limits, battery classification, recycling obligations and competing chemistries determine where 12V NiCd remains specified.

Regulation defines the boundaries of the 12V NiCd market. The EU Batteries Regulation applies from February 2024 and limits portable batteries to 0.002% cadmium, carrying over earlier restrictions that ended the cordless power tool exemption at the end of 2016. Industrial batteries remain permitted, so NiCd is confined to rail, aviation, utilities, oil and gas and other industrial uses in Europe. The previous Battery Directive was fully repealed in August 2025, completing the transition to the new regulatory framework.

Emergency lighting is the key regulatory question. LightingEurope argued in June 2024 that dedicated emergency lighting batteries meet the definition of industrial batteries under Regulation 2023/1542, which would keep NiCd emergency packs outside the portable-battery cadmium restriction. The outcome influences a large share of 12V NiCd demand, because emergency luminaires use NiCd packs for their tolerance of high temperatures and long standby life, and manufacturers are also developing nickel-metal hydride and lithium alternatives.

Substitution is the main long-term constraint. USGS notes that consumer battery markets have shifted to lithium chemistries, while industrial NiCd remains attractive for reliability and longevity. Lithium-ion and valve-regulated lead-acid batteries are winning specifications in telecom, UPS and solar applications, but NiCd retains its position where extreme temperatures, deep discharge, long standby periods and abuse tolerance are critical, as Power Grid Corporation of India’s switch from VRLA to NiCd demonstrates.

12V NiCd revenue spans a circular value chain from raw materials to recycling. Value is created in electrode manufacturing, cell assembly, battery configuration, integration into equipment such as luminaires, switchgear and rolling stock, and long-term service. Recycling recovers nickel and cadmium for reuse, closing the loop and reducing environmental risk, so producers with integrated recycling, such as Saft’s Oskarshamn operation, hold cost and compliance advantages over competitors.

The battery architecture is simple and robust. Each NiCd cell has a nominal voltage of 1.2V, so a 12V battery uses ten cells in series, packaged as sealed packs, monoblocs or assemblies of vented cells. Pocket-plate cells are among the most rugged battery types available, and true memory effect is limited to cells with sintered negative plates, which stationary NiCd products do not use, contrary to a common misconception about the chemistry.

Commercial responsibility shifts between participants. Battery makers supply equipment manufacturers, engineering contractors and end users, while maintenance contractors and service teams support installed fleets over decades. Because service lives can exceed 20 years, long-term support, spare parts and recycling arrangements influence purchasing decisions as much as initial price, giving established specialists with global service networks an advantage in competitive tenders for critical infrastructure.

Engineering

Reliability, Temperature Performance & Lifecycle Economics

Service life, temperature tolerance, float behaviour and maintenance influence specification decisions and replacement demand.

Reliability economics are central to the 12V NiCd market because batteries serve safety-critical and mission-critical functions. Failures in emergency lighting, substation protection or engine starting can have serious consequences, so buyers value proven service life, predictable performance across temperature extremes, tolerance of deep discharge and low maintenance needs. These attributes justify NiCd’s higher upfront cost compared with lead-acid alternatives in demanding applications.

01
Float effect

Long periods on float charge can depress voltage at the positive electrode, reducing available runtime unless managed through charging practices and periodic capacity testing.

02
Electrolyte maintenance

Vented cells require periodic water addition and electrolyte checks over their life, adding to service costs at remote sites and requiring trained maintenance staff.

03
Weight and size

NiCd batteries are heavier than lithium-ion alternatives, affecting some installations such as aircraft and space-limited cabinets where every kilogram matters.

04
Cadmium handling

Toxic cadmium requires controlled recycling and compliance throughout the life cycle, adding regulatory cost and requiring documented take-back arrangements with customers.

20+ yrs

Service life of pocket-plate NiCd batteries

GAZ pocket-plate NiCd batteries are specified for more than 20 years of service life and operation from ?50–C to +70–C, illustrating the durability that keeps nickel-cadmium in critical industrial backup applications.

Source: GAZ Ni-Cd product information

These characteristics create a commercial distinction between NiCd and competing chemistries. Saft research has shown that apparent memory effects in stationary NiCd batteries usually reflect the float effect at the positive electrode, which can be managed through charging practices. Combined with tolerance of abuse and extreme temperatures, this supports NiCd specifications where lifecycle reliability outweighs cost, and creates recurring demand for monitoring, maintenance and replacement services.

The 12V nickel-cadmium battery market is estimated at USD 256 million in 2026 and is forecast to reach USD 314 million by 2034, representing a 2.6% CAGR during 2026–2034. Growth is expected to come from utility, rail, metro and oil and gas investment, particularly in India, the Middle East and Africa, and from replacement demand in emergency lighting and engine starting. Cadmium regulation and lithium-ion substitution will continue to limit growth in telecom, UPS and consumer-adjacent applications.

Direction of Travel

Market trajectory: the market is estimated at USD 256 million in 2026 and is forecast to reach USD 314 million by 2034, representing a 2.6% CAGR over the forecast period.

The 12V NiCd battery will remain a specialist industrial product, with demand concentrated in safety-critical and harsh-environment applications. Growth in utilities, rail and metro systems and energy infrastructure will offset declines in telecom, consumer-adjacent and some emergency lighting uses where alternative chemistries gain share.

Asia-Pacific is expected to remain the largest market, led by India’s infrastructure investment and domestic manufacturing, while Europe’s regulatory decisions on emergency lighting classification and North America’s defence and utility demand shape their markets. Suppliers with recycling, certification and service capabilities are best placed to capture value.

Base-case growth conditions

Utility, rail and energy investment continues, emergency lighting batteries remain classified as industrial in Europe and replacement demand stays steady across emergency lighting and engine starting.

Upside conditions

More utilities follow India’s switch from VRLA to NiCd, and metro, rail and oil and gas projects in emerging markets expand specifications, lifting volumes for pocket-plate and fibre-plate products.

Downside conditions

Stricter cadmium rules, reclassification of emergency lighting batteries or faster lithium-ion substitution in industrial uses could reduce demand and accelerate the decline of smaller pack formats.

Long-term structural opportunity

Integrated recycling, long-term service contracts and higher-specification sealed designs can protect value in a mature specialist market and deepen customer relationships over decades.
